Premiership Promotion Worth £60m

A Deloitte report has put the cash windfall from promotion to the FA Premier
League at £60m each for the three successful clubs coming into football’s top
flight.

The report states that the three promoted teams for the 2007/08 season, which
already include Birmingham and Sunderland, are guaranteed a minimum of £35m in
extra revenue from the money the Premiership derives from TV and sponsorship
income.

Even if relegated after only one season, the teams will also be guaranteed an
additional £20m in parachute payments.

The better that the promoted teams perform in the league, the more money they
will receive.

‘The immediate revenue boost can provide promoted clubs with finances to help
bridge the gap between Championship and Premiership revenues,’ said Alex Byars
of Deloitte.

‘Excluding the biggest five or six clubs, most of the other Premiership clubs
will be relatively evenly-matched in financial terms in 2007/08. Carrying the
winning mentality from the Championship, whilst raising the club’s operations to
a Premiership level, is likely to determine whether or not the promoted clubs
stay up.’
