Public Continue To Block Scarlets Stadium Plan

Welsh rugby club Llanelli Scarlets is struggling to overcome public objections
into its bid to build a housing development at its Stradey Park stadium.

A second public inquiry into the issue met with strong objection from local
residents who have applied to Carmarthen Council to have the Scarlets’ training
area classed as village green.

The club’s plan is to build for up to 450 homes, designed to finance the move
to a new 13,500 capacity stadium on the other side of town.

The Scarlets’ legal case claims rugby was the land’s primary use and was only
used by others with their permission.

Residents claim they have used the land for decades and if it was given
village green status, it would mean the site has a community use which should
prevent it being built upon.

Both sides of the argument have been presented to the council who could
decide on a public inquiry, perhaps by the end of the week.

The Scarlets first unveiled plans to move to a new £15m stadium, jointly
financed with Carmarthenshire Council, in 2004.
