Rabobank is set to end its sponsorship of its professional cycling team following the continued fallout from the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s report on Lance Armstrong’s alleged use of performance enhancing drugs.

The Dutch bank has been involved in the sport for 17 years but will end its deal on 31st December. Rabobank’s Bert Bruggink said: ‘We are no longer convinced that the international professional world of cycling can make this a clean and fair sport.’

‘It is with pain in our heart, but for the bank this is an inevitable decision.’

Rabobank has been the biggest sponsor in Dutch professional cycling, spending close to 15 million euros a year, although the bank will continue to support amateur cycling.

The decision comes a day after its cycling team suspended Carlos Barredo after the International Cycling Union launched a doping case against the Spanish rider.
