Racing silks maker Allertons has changed course during the coronavirus pandemic in order to support hospitals and provide hundreds of sets of scrubs to the NHS for free.
Following the suspension of racing in Britain on 17th March, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Oxfordshire-based company says it contacted NHS Central to see if the service could use the brand’s expertise to supply products that would benefit medical professionals on the frontline.
According to Great British Racing, staff at Allertons have since volunteered to manufacture the scrubs, including working on weekends and bank holidays.
The brand says there are 14 volunteers in total producing around 100 garments per week and, so far, they have made around 400 sets of scrubs for NHS staff at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust’s four hospitals – Warwick, Leamington Spa, Stratford, and Shipton-on-Stowe.
The scrubs are worn underneath PPE by medical professionals and can be washed at temperatures above degrees in order to kill any possible remnants of the virus. This means staff do not have to wear normal clothes around the hospital, therefore reducing their chances of taking the virus back to their homes and putting their families at risk.
