Rangers have received approval for a £20m investment from their new American owners, marking a significant moment for the Ibrox club.

The investment comes from a consortium fronted by new chairman Andrew Cavenagh and the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers.

The cash injection is a substantial sum by Scottish football standards, particularly in the context of Celtic’s recent dominance, having won 13 of the past 14 Scottish Premiership titles.

New chairman Andrew Cavenagh has stated that the club’s aim is to win trophies and return to the Champions League. The exact portion of the £20m allocated directly to the transfer budget for new head coach Russell Martin’s squad remains undisclosed, as the club intends to be deliberately “opaque” about this figure.

The investment arrives as Rangers’ most recent financial results, from October 2024, showed a £17m loss for the previous financial year, with the club having £1.7m in the bank as of June 2024, a significant difference compared to Celtic’s £77m cash reserves at the end of the same period.

The new ownership group, including vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, who has experience with the 49ers and Leeds United, appears focused on a “smarter” approach to recruitment rather than simply outspending rivals. While the £20m provides a boost, the club may also look to generate funds through player sales, with Nicolas Raskin and Cyriel Dessers reportedly attracting interest. Former Dundee midfielder Lyall Cameron has been confirmed as a new addition, and the club is reportedly close to signing Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth. Several senior players, including Vaclav Cerny, Leon Balogun, Ianis Hagi, and Tom Lawrence, have departed the club.

Andrew Cavenagh said, “We are not looking for the sugar high – come in, spend some money, sign some players, try to win something, and then have the sugar crash that comes with that.”

Andrew Cavenagh said, “So we think £20m is the right amount at this time.”

Andrew Cavenagh said, “But, if we didn’t think we could win, we wouldn’t be here.”
