The Royal Bank of Scotland has confirmed that it has ended its sponsorship of The Open Championship after nine years.??
The move comes as the bank looks to revamp its sponsorship activities as after announcing the withdrawal of its F1 contract at the end of this season.
RBS appears to be cutting its ties with golf after also ending sponsorship of golfers Luke Donald and Paula Creamer, as well as withdrawing as an official partner of the PGA of America.??
An RBS spokesman said: ‘It is now time for us to step aside from our involvement as a patron of The Open Championship and we wish The R&A well in the continued development of one of the world’s major sporting events.’
It is understood that the bank will be keeping its sponsorship deals with the US Open, 6 Nations Rugby, and Andy Murray.??
The R&A chief executive Peter Dawson has already said that there is ‘strong interest’ from brands in sponsoring The Open.
