English Football League (EFL) One football club Reading FC has been charged by the EFL for multiple breaches of its rules.
The charges relate to the club failing to meet their obligations to pay its players’ wages on time and in full across three separate months in 2022 and 2023.
This comes less than 24 hours after it had emerged that the club failed to pay its loan players’ wages, an issue which looks set to plunge the side into another transfer embargo.
Reading had already been docked six points in April after it admitted to its failure to comply with budget restrictions.
The points deduction eventually resulted in its relegation from the second-tier Championship when it finished 22nd, six points from safety.
Fellow EFL football club Wigan Athletic was charged with a similar breach earlier in the year. It was asked to put 125% of the expected wages into a holding account in case of any further late payments, and were deducted points after this was not done.
Reading club owner, Dai Yongge, has also been charged with ‘causing the club to be in breach of EFL Regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club.’
The club and Mr Dai have until 4pm on Thursday 29th June 2023 to respond to the charges.
