England 2015, the tournament organisers of next year’s Rugby World Cup, have announced that almost one million tickets were secured during last month’s general sale.
With nearly half of the 48 matches going to ballot at every price category, 650,000 ticket applications alone were made for England’s pool clash against Australia at Twickenham with 500,000 for the World Cup final next October.
Tickets were on general sale for an 18-day period throughout September, with more than five million ticket applications in total – more than any of the previous seven Rugby World Cup tournaments.
Unsuccessful applicants in the September sale will now be given priority when remaining tickets go on sale by the end of November.
Games that attracted the highest ticket demand apart from England versus Australia, were other pool matches of England against Wales, New Zealand versus Argentina and Australia against Wales, plus both semi-finals and the final.
Meanwhile, official hospitality for the tournament is also securing record interest, with all boxes sold out at Twickenham, Exeter’s Sandy Park and the Falmer Stadium in Brighton.
In addition to the 950,000 tickets sold in the general sale, 340,000 tickets were sold by England Rugby 2015 to fans through rugby clubs in England and Wales as part of the Rugby Community Programme.
