Red Bull completes deal for Newcastle Falcons

Red Bull has finalised its acquisition of Premiership rugby club Newcastle Falcons, which will be renamed Newcastle Red Bulls from the start of the 2025–26 season.

The agreement has brought Red Bull into English rugby union for the first time and added Newcastle to its global sporting portfolio, which includes Red Bull Racing in Formula 1, RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer.

The Falcons have been competing in England’s top division, the Gallagher Premiership, which currently comprises 10 teams following the collapse of Wasps, Worcester Warriors and London Irish between 2022 and 2023. Newcastle have finished at the bottom of the league for the past three seasons and have been in urgent need of financial support, with head coach Steve Diamond having previously stated in March that investment was essential to keep the club operational for the upcoming campaign.

Red Bull’s investment is expected to stabilise the club’s financial situation and prevent further departures of local players. In the past year, England internationals Adam Radwan and Jamie Blamire, as well as long-serving forward Callum Chick, have all left the club. Although Newcastle secured a single win in October 2024, their first in 25 matches, they concluded the season with only two victories from 18 games.

Red Bull has previously acquired and developed sports organisations through a combination of branding, infrastructure investment and athlete development. In motorsport, it has owned Red Bull Racing since 2004 and has won multiple Formula 1 world championships. In football, RB Leipzig progressed from the fifth tier of German football to the Bundesliga within six years and qualified for the Champions League in their first top-flight season.

The deal follows ongoing financial challenges within the Premiership, where clubs have faced rising operational costs, falling attendances and tighter financial regulations. The addition of a global commercial backer is expected to increase visibility and potentially influence the league’s financial future.
