Red Bull has offered its own track as a potential venue for a Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2013 following a re-shuffle of next year’s race calendar by Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA.
The re-shuffle has left a slot open for an extra race at the end of July and had previously been expected to be filled by the return of a Turkish race. However, financial concerns surrounding the viability of such a race has led to Red Bull offering its own track in Austria as a European alternative.
Red Bull’s Helmut Marko commented: ‘We have made the FIA aware that the Red Bull Ring has a fully updated Formula 1 licence.’
The team owns the track that staged the Austrian Grand Prix from 1970-1987. However there are also some potential barriers to Red Bull’s bid, including a shortage of accommodation in the region of Styrian, as well as an existing agreement between the team and the regional authorities that no event with a crowd of more than 40,000 would be staged.
The 2013 Formula 1 calendar had originally been set to feature 19 races after the organisers of the New Jersey Grand Prix revealed the venue would not be ready in time to host a race.
