The Football Association has appointed former England rugby management official Dave Reddin as their new head of performance services, reporting directly to the governing body’s director of Elite Development, Dan Ashworth, and will be based at the new national football centre, St George’s Park.

The 44 year-old was a key member of Sir Clive Woodward’s staff in England’s triumphant 2003 Rugby World Cup victory in Australia.

Reddin, who was also director of performance services for Team GB for the London 2012 Olympic Games, will be charged with creating ‘new tournament strategies aimed at increasing success’, according to the FA, and will oversee a number of areas including sport science, medical, performance analysis, psychology and physiotherapy.

Media reports suggest that a key focus for the UK Sport coaching hall of famer will be to strengthen the mindset of the England team to help improve their record in penalty shoot-outs.

Barring one successful shoot-out against Spain at Euro ’96, England have gone out of major tournaments on penalties in 1990, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006 and 2012.
