Former Rugby Football Union (RFU) professional rugby director Rob Andrew has been appointed chief executive of Sussex County Cricket Club.

Andrew replaces Zac Toumazi who has held the role since 2012 and will take over in January 2017. Part of his new role will see the 52-year-old take charge of overseeing the cricketing infrastructure within the area.

Prior to taking up the role, Andrew was also director of rugby at Newcastle Falcons and won 71 rugby union caps for England.

He will also be charged with taking Sussex through ongoing England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) proposals for a city-based franchise Twenty20 tournament, scheduled to begin in 2018.

Sussex CCC chairman, Jim May, said of the appointment: “I am extremely pleased about the appointment of Rob Andrew.

“Rob joins us at an important moment and he fully believes in our strategy of increasing the quantity and quality of participation in the recreational game. We want to build a stronger player pathway to ensure that Sussex succeeds at the top level of cricket in the long term.”

Andrew added: “I am looking forward to working with everyone connected with Sussex. The structures that have been put in place under the Sussex Cricket umbrella have laid a very strong foundation for the future.”
