Rising tennis star Laura Robson has signed a new partnership with Virgin Active to become an ambassador for the health club chain, owned by British billionaire businessman Richard Branson.
The 19-year-old will become Virgin Active’s first tennis ambassador for two years when the agreement officially begins next week to coincide with World Tennis Day on 4th March.
Speaking at the launch of a new Virgin Active initiative in London alongside Branson, Robson told Bloomberg: ‘There are not only health benefits to playing tennis, but it’s a great way to meet new people. It would be great to get more young girls and children in general to play more. Hopefully through this, more people will stick with it.’
Gary Stewart, head of racquets at Virgin Active, added: ‘She’s a perfect fit for our brand because she’s fit and she’s young and she’s successful.’
Robson, ranked 43rd in the world, is widely considered one of Britain’s most promising athletes and the new deal also marks the teenager’s first partnership beyond equipment endorsements.
The 2008 junior Wimbledon champion won silver alongside Andy Murray in the mixed doubles at the London Olympics last year before becoming the first British woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam since 1998 at September’s US Open.
Robson added that her goal is to be inside the top 32 and seeded by the time Wimbledon, which suits her game style, comes around.
