Rooney Scores UK Twitter Landmark
Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has become the first UK athlete to pass 10m followers on Twitter.
With a total 10m and counting, Rooney is the only sporting individual in the UK top 10 most-followed list, currently in ninth position, with music dominating the remaining places.
Globally, Rooney is now up to sixth on the list of most-followed athletes – consisting entirely of football stars aside from LeBron James (15.2m) and Kevin Durant (8.25m). However, Rooney remains a long way behind chart topper and former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who has amassed over 30m followers.
According to Twitter statisticians Rooney’s twitter fans could max out Old Trafford 172 times, with 74% of his following originating from outside the UK.
Rooney has endured a tough start to the new season after being named skipper of club and country, and was suspended for this weekend’s victory over former club Everton after he was shown a straight red for lashing out on West Ham’s Stewart Downing in the previous game.
