The Ryder Cup organisers have called for a commitment from the PGA Tour to hold future tournaments earlier to avoid weather problems that were evident at Celtic Manor this year.??

Torrential rain in Newport, Wales meant that the final day of the Ryder Cup had to roll over to the Monday and it was feared that attendance and viewing figures would drop.

??However, the excitement of the finale saw 35,000 spectators stay on at Celtic Manor on the Monday to see Europe regain the title.??

But Ryder Cup organisers would prefer not to gamble with the weather and would like the Cup moved earlier in the calendar in a bid to ensure the elements have less of an impact.??

The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup series has been blamed for pushing the Ryder Cup back to the last weekend in September.??

Joe Steranka, chief executive of the PGA of America said: ‘We have started talking to the PGA Tour and Tim Finchem (PGA Tour commissioner) has given us a commitment that the Ryder Cup will not be played later than the last week of September.’

The changes should come in after 2012 as the PGA Tour will have secured a new TV deal that would mean a regular slot for the Ryder Cup.
