Social networking site Twitter continues to stir up the sporting world as the Europe and United States Ryder Cup teams have been banned from tweeting until after the end of the tournament.??
European captain Colin Montgomerie and his US counterpart Corey Pavin said that the site could cause unnecessary ‘trouble’ and have decided to ban the players from using the site.??
Several athletes have recently been punished for comments they have published on the micro-blogging site.??
England cricketer Kevin Pietersen was recently fined for his comments on Twitter following his omission from England’s one-day squad and Montgomerie said the cricketer’s outburst was the reason he has implemented the ban.??
‘Pietersen’s error led me to change my view on players tweeting,’ said Montgomerie, speaking ahead of the Ryder Cup which begins at Celtic Manor this week, ‘Tweeting and social network sites can get one into trouble.’ ??
Pavin agreed with Montgomerie and said that: ‘It can be a little bit distracting sometimes, and I think it is important to focus on the Ryder Cup and playing in the matches.’
