SailGP has announced the acquisition of the Canada team by Canadian businessman Dr. Greg Bailey.

The change in ownership ensures that the Canada SailGP team will compete in the F50 catamaran racing league for the 2024/25 season.

Meanwhile, the championship has signed two-time Olympic champion Giles Scott to replace Phil Robertson as the driver for the Canadian outfit. The British sailor’s move from the GBR SailGP Team marks the first ever transfer fee deal in the league’s history.

SailGP has also confirmed the return of the Canadian SailGP race for 2026, after the inaugural race was staged in Halifax, Nova Scotia in June this year.

“Canada is one of SailGP’s fastest-growing emerging markets, and we’re excited to bolster this passionate fanbase with a now-confirmed Canadian team and a home event to look forward to in 2026,” said Andrew Thompson, Managing Director at SailGP.

“Today’s news is another milestone on SailGP’s journey to grow and professionalize the sport of sailing – with a competitive transfer market for our athletes, and teams that are consistently growing in value.”

Scott added, “I’m really looking forward to representing Canada at the highest level of our sport in this upcoming season.

“Canada has already proven to be a competitive force, and I’m determined to build on that success with a talented crew beside me.”
