SailGP has confirmed Rio de Janeiro as the host destination for the global sailing series’ first ever event in Brazil.
The maiden event will be staged in Guanabara Bay on 3rd and 4th May 2025, and will be organised by Brazilian sports and entertainment form IMN, and the Brazilian sailing confederation, CBVela.
SailGP has also signed up Olympic gold medallist Martine Grael as the driver of the newly launched Brazil team, who also becomes the F50 catamaran racing league’s first female driver.

Earlier this year, SailGP acquired rights to a new Brazil team with investment firm Mubadala Capital, which will join the league from the 2025 season as its first South American team.
In July, SailGP revealed that it would be heading to Brazil for the first time next year, after releasing its schedule for 2025.

“We know the people of Rio will add their special Brazilian flair to the event, getting behind Martine, the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team and enjoying the adrenaline-fuelled atmosphere our events are becoming known for,” said Russell Coutts, CEO of SailGP.
IMN Owner Alan Adler added, “It has always been our dream to have the Brazilian team participating in a stage close to the fans, who are passionate about high-level sports.
“SailGP, a new professional league, synonymous with innovation, technology, speed and a serious commitment to environmental preservation, will certainly captivate the public.”
