Samsung electronics has unveiled its first ever Samsung Galaxy team, a group of ambassadors that will promote its brand at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi next year.

The worldwide Olympic partner’s team includes top athletes from a variety of winter sports along with promising Russian competitors who will be competing in Sochi.

The Samsung Galaxy team Russia is headed by Russian ice hockey star Evgeni Malkin, and also includes skier Nikita Kryukov, biathlete Evgeny Ustyugov, figure skaters Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Tatyana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov along with Russian paralympians Sergey Shilov and Serafim Pikalov.

Maria Sharapova has also been named as a Samsung brand ambassador for the Games and will work with Samsung to promote sporting and Olympics principles and help to raise awareness for Samsung’s sponsorship of Sochi 2014.

The Russian tennis star, who also backed Sochi’s bid to host the Games, was the world’s highest-paid female athlete when she signed a three-year sponsorship deal with Samsung in 2012.

Along with the Samsung Galaxy team, Samsung are organising other projects to support its sponsorship, including the ‘Samsung Olympic games digital hub’, the WOW system (Wireless Olympics works) along with the public WOW system and the Samsung Matryoshka – a good luck symbol specifically designed for Sochi 2014.

Malkin, who is tipped to be one of the stars of the Games, said: ‘To be part of the Samsung Galaxy team is a great honour. I’m sincerely grateful to Samsung for the invitation to join its team and am certain that the company’s advanced technologies and campaign will help to bring sport into every home.’

Sung-ho Jun, president of Samsung Electronics’ CIS headquarters, added: ‘Our goal is to leverage our advanced wireless technologies to expand the Olympic Games experience to as many people as possible, and give everyone the opportunity to enjoy the competitions and enter into the spirit of the Olympic Games. The respected athletes involved in the Samsung Galaxy team project will help us bring people closer to the Olympic Games than ever before.’
