London production company SBX Studios has been commissioned to produce a new documentary starring Birmingham City striker Troy Deeney.
The 60-minute documentary, entitled ‘Troy Deeney – Where’s My Story?’, is due to be broadcast on Channel 4 in May 2022, and will explore the footballers high profile campaign to make the teaching of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic histories and experiences mandatory in the UK school curriculum.
Deeney, who was a vocal about Premier League players’ decision to take the knee before matches in their fight against racism, believes the current curriculum is failing children from ethnic minorities.
News of SBX Studios’ commission comes as Deeney’s petition to mandate more diversity across the curriculum surpasses 50,000 signatures. His open letter to Education Secretary, Nadhim Zahawi, which he pebbed in February 2022, resulted in a meeting between the pair to discuss future action and solutions, all of which is documented in the programme.
Also featured in the documentary are boxer Anthony Joshua, actor David Harewood MBE, former Manchester City footballer and pundit Micah Richards and grime musician Big Narstie.
“Together with Troy this is a film we’re really proud of at SBX and exactly the kind of project we set up the company for,” said SBX Studios Managing Partner, Rowan Wilkinson. “Troy’s passion for this cause and what he has done with his campaign is seriously impressive and we count ourselves lucky to be helping him tell this story. We are grateful to Channel 4 for the support – our first commission with the channel is a milestone for us at this early stage of the business”
Channel 4 Commissioner, Joe Blake-Turner, added, “Troy Deeney and SBX Studios have embarked on a project that has the power to transform education in this country and have a really positive long-term impact on society”
Established in 2022, SBX Studios, which is shortlisted for Young Agency of the Year at the Sport Industry Awards 2022, is the sister company of sports communication and content agency and Sport Industry Awards partner Soapbox London.
