Schools across Britain are being urged to sign up for this year’s Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, which encourages children to try a new Olympic or Paralympic sport for the first time.
Last year five million young people, at 14,000 schools across Britain took part in the week, which this year will run from 27th June to 1st July.
This year the week will be run in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust and will use the anticipation of the upcoming London Olympic games to try and inspire children to try new sports.
Registered schools will also be provided with free resources including a teacher planning pack and they will have the opportunity to hold inter-school competitions and their own opening and closing ceremonies.
Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) said: ‘the fact that nearly 14,000 schools took part in National School Sport Week in 2010 confirms what we witness every time we travel around the UK – that children are excited about trying new sports. The enthusiasm up and down the country and overall support for the London 2012 Games is clear, and it is great to see the impact it is already having on school children’.
Schools in England and Wales can sign-up today at: www.schoolsportweek.org and get ready to join Britain’s biggest celebration of school sport from 27 June to 1 July.
