Event Scotland, the government funded organisation aimed at attracting events to Scotland, is to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether the country could viably bid to host rugby union’s 2015 World Cup.

The survey is being conducted with a view to Scotland and one or more other home unions potentially bidding jointly to host the 2015 tournament. Japan has already expressed its desire to apply to stage the event.

The results of the Event Scotland study will need to win the full support of the Scottish Rugby Union and the Scottish Executive before any firm bid for the 2015 tournament could be considered.

The governing body, based at Murrayfield, is likely to be central to the considerations. The national stadium will be the venue for Scotland’s 2007 Rugby World Cup games against New Zealand and Romania this September, events run by the French organising committee with the Millennium Stadium the only other non-French venue for the tournament.

A 2015 steering group organising the feasibility study met for the first time in November. The body is chaired by Event Scotland and features representatives from the Scottish Executive, Scottish Enterprise, Edinburgh City Council, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, sportscotland and Scottish Rugby.

A statement from Event Scotland read: ‘The steering group is expected to make its recommendations to Scottish Rugby and Scottish ministers in the summer of 2007.’

The 2011 World Cup is taking place in New Zealand.
