Scottish rugby has been hit by a doping scandal after international Scott MacLeod failed a drugs test that revealed his sample contained a high level of testosterone.

The 29-year-old forward was suspended after a standard ‘B’ sample was asked for by the Scottish Rugby Union.

MacLeod previously failed a drug test last February, but was cleared on the account that he had taken medicine for asthma without permission.

A major player for Welsh regional team the Scarlets, MacLeod was also instrumental during last season’s Six Nations championship, where Scotland managed to beat England.

He is now under investigation and is banned from playing and training with Scotland, which means he will probably miss the team’s final match at Stradey Park on Friday night against Bristol in the EDF Energy Cup.

The failed test could also jeopardise the player’s participation in Scotland’s autumn Test series against New Zealand on 8th November, as punishment could result in a year’s suspension from the sport.

After last year’s failed drug test, MacLeod claimed that it was a mix-up and that he ‘certainly won’t make the same mistake again’.
