As its international team continues with its season-ending tour of North America, Scottish Rugby’s business results of the last 12 months have been declared the strongest in their history.
Overall Scottish Rugby posted its highest ever turnover of £40m while more than 600,000 people passed through the turnstiles for international, professional and club matches across season 2013/14, a new high for the sport in the Scotland.
The governing body also added Famous Grouse, Unilever, Tennent Caledonian Breweries, Lucozade and Peter Vardy to its list of blue-chip partners as well as securing a further £2m from the Scottish Government’s Cashback scheme being invested in the community game.
Scottish Rugby’s Director of Commercial Operations, Communications and Public Affairs, Dominic McKay, said of the results: ‘Terrific strides have been made off the pitch over the course of the past year, culminating in the transformational partnership with BT which will deliver very positively for us for years to come, especially in funding the grassroots game.’
He continued: ‘Now, with this game-changing investment in our sport from BT, we can grow the game of rugby throughout Scotland, in particular with the establishment of a robust academy structure and to enhance the standard of club rugby. It’s a real shot in the arm for Scottish rugby – and sport – and now everyone within the organisation is fully focussed on capitalising on this pivotal opportunity to grow the game to a new level.’
Glasgow led the way at club level, reaching the final of the RaboDirect Pro 12 resulting in average gates up by 29% compared to 2012-13 at 5,889, including a club record 10,000 crowd against Munster at Scotstoun in the semi-final.
