A majority woman-founded group featuring a number of famous names has secured the rights from the US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to bring a new team to Los Angeles.

The new team will join the league in the spring of 2022, and is led by Oscar-winning actress and activist Natalie Portman, as well as gaming entrepreneur Julie Uhrman and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian, who led the investment through his firm Initialized Capital.

The founding investor group includes a number of big names including 23-time grand slam winner Serena Williams and daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, actors including Uzo Aduba, Jessica Chastain and Eva Longoria, and a host of former US Women’s National Team players including Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach.

“Today we take an exciting step by announcing the first women majority-owned and led ownership group,” said Portman.

“I am thrilled by the opportunity to partner with this incredible group of people to bring a professional women’s soccer team to Los Angeles. Together, we aim to build not only a winning team on the field, but also to develop a passionately loyal fan base.

“We also hope to make a substantive impact on our community, committing to extending access to sports for young people in Los Angeles through our relationship with the LA84 Foundation. Sports are such a joyful way to bring people together, and this has the power to make tangible change for female athletes both in our community and in the professional sphere.”

The official name of the team, as well as its venue partner, will be announced before the end of the year, according to the group, however it says it has already formally coined itself ‘Angel City’ in honor of its planned home in Los Angeles.

The consortium has also announced a collaboration with the LA84 Foundation, which will become its Social Impact Partner in a bid to create an impact on community relations.
