Setanta Sports has reached the landmark 1m premium subscribers to its service which incorporates its live coverage of the Barclays Premier League.

The broadcaster has hit the 1m subscription mark only four months after it began broadcasting live Premiership football after breaking Sky’s monopoly of the live TV rights to the top-flight.

In addition to its premium subscriber base, Setanta also has more than 2m customers through the availability of its channels as a basic-tier service through Virgin Media and Irish cable firm, UPC. In total, Setanta has over 3m subscribers.

Leonard Ryan, joint Setanta chief executive, said the premium subs milestone means the company is on track to meet its financial and operational targets ahead of schedule.

Setanta last week secured the rights to the away qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup involving England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
