Seven League has landed a new brief from the NHL, as the American ice hockey league looks to grow its presence in Europe.

The UK-based agency has been tasked with running localised social media channels for the league in German, Finnish, Czech and Swedish, with social media managers based on the ground in each country, and content posted across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The firm will also be creating and managing a new NHL Europe Instagram account, championing the more than 220 Europeans playing in the league.

The digital sports consultancy has won similar business from rights holders in recent months, including a European project for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

Jaka Lednik, NHL Group Vice President of International Strategy, said: “The NHL is always striving to better communicate with our fan base in Europe. We felt Seven League had the vision and experience of how we could put this in practice across social media. Through this partnership, we are already reaping the benefit through fan growth, and increased engagement and content consumption across our core European markets on social.”

Peter Clare, Consulting Partner at Seven League, added: “The NHL is an ambitious, global league with a fantastic opportunity to grow in key northern European markets. We are delighted to partner with them on this journey and to help the use digital channels and localised content to grow the sport.”

The NHL, meanwhile, has cemented its commitment to growth in Europe by booking regular season games in Finland and the Czech Republic as part of its 2020 Global Games.
