The Scottish Football League chief executive Gordon Smith has called for a two-month winter break, which would extend the season until June.
The SFA’s lack of a winter break restricts the Scottish national team from playing international matches or setting up training sessions.
However, a two-month gap in winter would require the season to be extended, which raises issues with the FIFA requirement for an early finish ahead of the World Cup finals in South Africa.
In addition to the conflict with FIFA, the possible winter break has players concerned about cash flow, as they would have no income from gate receipts for the duration of those two months.
However, Smith has claimed that this is an unnecessary worry, as teams would still finish the season with the same number of games.
