Clive Sherling has been appointed as the first independent non-executive chair of the Football Foundation.

Prior to Sherling’s appointment, the Foundation chair was appointed from within the board of trustees, who are nominated by the funding partners.

Sherling is a past chairman of the Football Licensing Authority and the Sports Aid Foundation Charitable Trust. He was involved with the new Wembley project for ten years and was vice-chairman of Wembley National Stadium Limited for a number of years.

He retired from business life in 2004 having been chief operating officer of Apax Partners, the global private equity firm, and previously a partner at Arthur Andersen.

Created in 2000, the Football Foundation is a partnership between the Premier League, The Football Association and Government, which seeks to address a previous under investment in local grassroots sports facilities, and to harness the power and popularity of football to make a positive impact on individuals and local communities.

The Foundation has been particularly successful at using the funds available to it to more than double the partnership investment. For example, since 2000, the Foundation has awarded grants totalling £362m to support 6,887 projects worth £825m.
