The Rugby League World Cup, which is currently underway across England, has already broken viewing records, according to tournament organisers.
The tournament, which was postponed due to COVID-19, has reached new audiences with every game being aired on the BBC.
England’s first game, a dismantling of Samoa, attracted a peak audience of 1.8 million people. This was followed by 1.5 million people watching Shaun Wane’s side defeat France.
Furthermore, in-person attendances are historical as over 43,000 were in attendance at St James’ Park for the tournament’s opening game. The crowd in Bolton for England v France was the biggest to watch the two nations compete for over 65 years.
More records are set to be broken as the double-header of World Cup finals at Old Trafford on 19th November is on course to sell out.
Jon Dutton, Chief Executive of the Rugby League World Cup, expressed, “It’s been a brilliant opening couple of weeks of the tournament, and it’s been great to see thousands of supporters in the ground and millions tuning in across, TV, online and social platforms to take in the exhilarating action that the athletes are delivering for us.”
