As ‘A Winning Mindset – Lessons from the Paralympics’ was crowned the best of the podcast bunch at the Sports Industry Awards 2021, attentions turn to the launch of the ‘Sports Podcast Awards’ coming up early next year.
October 2021 saw the 20th edition of the Sport Industry Awards. Held at Evolution in London, the event attracted famous faces from the sporting world to celebrate the most important work of the past 12 months.
A new addition for this year was the award for ‘Sports Podcast of the Year’ with the very best in-audio content creators battling it out for top honours. The inaugural award was presented to ‘A Winning Mindset – Lessons from the Paralympics’, a podcast produced by the IPC (International Paralympic Committee), Allianz, and LiveWire Sport.
The podcast, which offers a fascinating journey into the minds of Paralympians, also provides a platform for Para athletes to talk about their empowering and inspirational stories with recent guests including Jonnie Peacock, Kaleo Kanahele Maclay and Carlos Serrano.
The driving force in bringing the podcasts to life is Natalia Dannenber-Spreier, Head of Brand and Engagement at IPC.
Speaking on their big win Natalia said: “We are honoured to accept the inaugural Sport Podcast Award for A Winning Mindset: Lessons from the Paralympics, with a huge thank you to the Para athletes and special guests whose stories of overcoming trauma, self-acceptance and body confidence allowed our listeners to grow and develop.
“In a year where the global pandemic has disproportionately affected the world’s 15 per cent who have a disability, it was important that the voices of the world’s largest marginalised group were heard, to initiate change towards a society more inclusive of persons with disabilities, and podcasts are the perfect medium to achieve this.”
The introduction of the ‘Best Sports Podcast’ category coincides with the launch of the Sports Podcast Awards, an annual celebration that honours the work of the very best that the global sports audio community has to offer. The awards are for everyone and anyone that has a sports podcast, no matter how big or small, and the unique judging format makes this a truly democratic process, giving podcasters the power to choose who they think is the best in the game.
Spearheaded since early 2021 by ex-Spotify exec Dylan Pugh, who was also recently appointed Managing Director of Sport Industry Group, the advisory board for the awards contains some of the biggest professionals in the sports industry including Global Sports Partnerships Director of Facebook, Peter Hutton, UK sports broadcaster Gabby Logan, and former CEO of Sky Sports Barney Francis.
Entries to the awards are open until Sunday 10th October and they have already had entries from podcast heavyweights such as the High Performance Podcast with Jake Humphrey, Socially Distant Sports Bar, Seaman Says, Match of the Day Top10’s, Fearless Women, the Good the Bad & the Rugby, F1: Beyond the Grid and Fight Disciples.
The winners will be announced through a virtual ceremony in February 2022.
