The £25m redevelopment plan for Silverstone has been given the green light – an
overhaul that is seen as vital if the motor racing circuit is to retain its
place on the F1 calendar.

The British Racing Drivers’ Club, which own the Silverstone circuit, approved
the proposals at an extraordinary general meeting of the body’s board.

The £25m redevelopment will see the construction of new grandstands, pit and
paddock facilities, a science park, manufacturers’ test centre, hotel and
conference centre, as well as new homes on the site.

F1 supremo Bernie Eccelstone has long voiced his displeasure at the current
facilities in place at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix and only renewed
the venue’s contract until 2009 on the proviso that major improvements were made
before the deal expires.

BRDC chairman Robert Brooks stated: ‘This is a clear demonstration of the
club’s absolute commitment to deliver a world-class venue of which British motor
sport enthusiasts can be truly proud.’
