Law firm Howard Kennedy helped this year’s Sport Industry NextGen Leaders navigate the upcoming data protection law changes and put their debating skills to the test at an afternoon session at the organisation’s central London HQ on Monday.

Sport Industry NextGen in partnership with Barclays identifies tomorrow’s leaders, rewards their potential and nurtures their talent through a dedicated Leadership Package to better equip them for future leadership roles.

With new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) laws set to impact the vast majority of businesses across sport and beyond over the next few months, the Sport Industry NextGen Leaders rounded off their 2017 Leadership Package by finding out everything they needed to know about the changes.

With insights from a number of legal experts in commercial litigation and IP, topics covered scope; accountability and protection; data protection officers; consent rules; transferring data; subject access requests; portability; right to erasure; breach notifications and fines.

The Sport Industry NextGen Leaders were then split into groups to put their debating skills to the test, arguing on either side that “This house believes that human rights has no role to play in sport” in a challenging debate chaired by Howard Kennedy’s head of media litigation, Mark Stephens CBE.

This week’s session was the second time that the Sport Industry NextGen Leaders have benefitted from the law firm’s expertise, following a previous development and training session in April aimed at key legal issues and practises relevant to the sport industry.

The Sport Industry NextGen Leaders receive a Leadership Package throughout the year filled with experiences, coaching and training to help develop their potential and build a powerful network of likeminded peers.

2018’s Sport Industry NextGen Leaders, revealed in October, will also benefit from a full Leadership Package, beginning with Sport Industry NextGen Unlocked on Thursday 1st February.

The evening will offer guests the opportunity to network with every year of Sport Industry NextGen Leaders, the Coaches and other senior members of the industry, as well as hear from previous Leaders and special guest speakers, including world champion diver Tom Daley, who will share his experiences of growing up as a focus for the sport industry, while battling for medal success at the highest level.

The event is free to attend but places are limited. You can register your interest to attend the evening here, before a ballot will take place in January if required.

Sport Industry NextGen is backed by Barclays who return as headline partner for a third year.

In addition to Barclays, Sport Industry NextGen is also supported by Official Partners Howard Kennedy and Loughborough University London, and Leadership Package Partner, Inspirational Development Group.
