The winners of 2015 RBS 6 Nations Championship will lift a brand new trophy on the final day of this year’s competition, designed and crafted by world-renowned silversmiths Thomas Lyte.
It represents only the second trophy since 1883 to be created for the championship, replacing the first overall winner’s prize unveiled in 1993, which is being retired as it represented the nations that took part in the pre-millennium Five Nations Championship.
The Thomas Lyte team – who also create the prestigious BT Sport Industry Award trophies, as well as maintain the Webb Ellis trophy and the FA Cup – crafted the new trophy from over fifty pieces, hand spun from Sterling 925 Silver.
John Feehan, chief executive of Six Nations Rugby, said: “We are delighted with the new RBS 6 Nations trophy. The trophy is a magnificent addition to rugby’s greatest championship and we are looking forward to presenting it to the successful captain on the final weekend of the 2015 Championship. I would like to applaud the work of Thomas Lyte, who have produced a stunning trophy to match the status of our competition.”
Kevin Baker, chief executive of Thomas Lyte, added: “Having crafted some of rugby’s most iconic trophies, we are delighted to have the honour in making the new RBS 6 Nations Trophy. The new trophy is a masterpiece of British silversmithing, hand crafted by Thomas Lyte’s senior silversmith Lee Bull. Thomas Lyte prides itself on the skills of its expert silversmiths and this iconic symbol of rugby couldn’t be in better hands.”
As official silversmiths, Thomas Lyte Silver, is one of the few remaining craftwork shops in the UK producing exquisite gold and silver trophies. The London workshops are responsible for designing and making trophies across the globe and are appointed by Her Majesty the Queen as Goldsmiths and Silversmiths.
Thomas Lyte has a strong affiliation with rugby, designing and making the trophies and awards for all the leading rugby tournaments, including European Champions and Challenge Cup, the LV= Cup, The Under 20’s Six Nations Championship, the Women’s Six Nations Championship and are the official restorers for this year’s 2015 Rugby World Cup.
