Sony has officially announced its acquisition of the UK based company Hawk-Eye Ltd, famous for its live sports tracking technology now widely used in cricket, snooker and tennis.

Hawk-Eye debuted on television at Lord’s Cricket ground ten year’s ago and is currently being used at the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and tennis Grand Slams such as the US Open, and the Australian Open, and Wimbledon.

Naomi Climer, vice-president Sony Europe, said: ‘Hawk-Eye is recognised globally for its innovative solutions for resolving close calls in critical sporting situations, particularly in cricket and tennis where they have developed a worldwide reputation’.

Paul Hawkins, the founder of Hawk-Eye added: ‘Our skills and established knowledge coupled with Sony’s breadth of capabilities and technologies will create immense opportunities for the sports industry’.

The news comes soon after football’s governing body FIFA met to discuss the inclusion of goal-line technology – hinting that such technology could be ready by the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
