Sony Ericsson has signed up as a sponsor for the 2010 FIFA World Cup becoming the tournament’s official mobile phone handset.

The deal is a sub-licensing agreement from existing FIFA partner Sony Corporation which is a 50:50 partner in Sony Ericsson.

The appointment is effective immediately and forms part of the Digital Life category, which Sony Corporation acquired in its deal with FIFA in 2005.

The Sony Ericsson sponsorship runs to the end of 2010 and includes the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. As the official mobile handset of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, Sony Ericsson will enjoy various category exclusive rights globally and will be designated a FIFA World Cup Sponsor. Sony Ericsson will also have access to other FIFA properties.

The sponsorship adds to Sony Ericsson’s burgeoning sponsorship portfolio which includes title sponsorship of the women’s tennis WTA Tour.
