The International Cricket Council has named Ray Mali, the current president of Cricket South Africa, as the new acting president of the governing body following the recent death of previous incumbent Percy Sonn.
The move, approved by the ICC Board, will see Mali take office until the ICC’s 2008 annual conference.
Mali was named ICC acting president after the governing body handed South Africa the nomination forthe post.
Previous ICC president Sonn died in Cape Town last month at the age of 57 after complications arose following routine bowl operation.
He had been ICC president since June 2006 and had agreed to serve until 2009.
The ICC has decided, however, that the acting president should only fill the role until next year.
‘The acting president will exercise all the powers and duties of the president while in office and his taking the role does not prejudice his chances of being appointed ICC president in the future,’ a statement said.
