Spar To Back Glasgow 2018
SPAR International has been announced as an Official Partner of the Glasgow 2018 European Championships.
The independent retail group becomes the exclusive cross-Championships sponsor of the inaugural multisport event, which will see European Championships in seven sports staged across Glasgow and its partner city, Berlin, Germany, in August.
SPAR had already signed up as principal sponsor for the European Athletics Championships – the only event being staged in Berlin – building on its long history of support for athletics in the UK and the continent.
The new agreement will allow the brand to extend its health and wellness-based activation across both cities and the 12 sports disciplines involved.
Speaking at the launch, which brought together mascots Bonnie the Seal and Berlino the Bear, SPAR International managing director Tobias Wasmuht said: “SPAR is committed to being a responsible retailer and encouraging our customers to make healthy lifestyle choices.
“In addition to our sponsorship, at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin we will be offering spectator information on exercise and healthy eating. We are delighted to sponsor the joint European Championships in Glasgow and Berlin and wish all the competitors well.”
Scottish Government sports minster Joe Fitzpatrick commented: “It is great to see another well-known brand being confirmed as an official partner for the inaugural European Championships.
“Glasgow 2018 promises to deliver exciting sporting action which will showcase our world-class Scottish venues, offering us a fantastic opportunity to encourage people to live healthy and active lifestyles.”
Glasgow City Council deputy leader, councillor David McDonald added: “I’m delighted to see a big European brand with a long-standing commitment to sport backing the first ever European Championships.
“Over 11 days, Glasgow 2018 will highlight our city’s top-class sport and culture, featuring amazing athletes and artists in fantastic venues.”
The European Championships multi-sport event will Glasgow host 52 nations in disciplines including dving, open water swimming, swimming, synchronised swimming, road cycling, track cycling, BMX, mountain biking, golf team championships, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon. The competitions will be staged across 12 Scottish venues, with athletics events to be held in Berlin’s iconic Olympic Stadium.
SPAR joins Strathmore and Eurovision as the other commercial brands in the top “Official Partner” tier of Glasgow 2018’s marketing programme.
