Global fantasy football NFT game Sorare has secured a multi-year license agreement with the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), adding another European league to its portfolio. Under terms of the new deal, Sorare will launch a collection of online fantasy game NFTs featuring top Scottish players from Scottish Premiership clubs.
However, SPFL champions Rangers has opted out of the agreement, due to their two-year partnership with Sportemon Go. The Ibrox club has cited ‘pre-existing commercial obligations’ for not being part of the new deal. However, it is reported that Sorare are ‘working to onboard Rangers separately’.
This is the second time Rangers has disputed a SPFL sponsorship deal this year. Earlier in the season the pair were at odds when cinch became the new official league sponsors, taking over from Ladbrokes, with Rangers arguing that there was a conflict of interest with current sponsor, Park’s Motor Group. Rangers still do not display any cinch advertising on their jerseys or around Ibrox Stadium and the matter is set to be settled in court.
Sorare is a fantasy football game, where players buy, sell, trade, and manage a virtual team with digital player cards. The game uses blockchain technology while the cards themselves are NFTs and can just bought as collectibles. Sorare already has agreements in place with ten leagues including LaLiga, the Bundesliga and MLS.
SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster, said, “The SPFL is always looking for innovative ways to offer our fans more enriching experiences and to broaden the appeal of our competitions to audiences from around the world. We’ve been looking at the digital market as a way to do that for some time and it quickly became clear that Sorare is a leader in this emerging category.”
