Under Armour has unveiled details of its latest round of testing on its new smart golf shoe, with the prototype worn by Jordan Spieth at the recent Open Championship.

As professional golfers are not allowed to track their movements with wearble tracking bands, the brand used the same technology as the Speedform Gemini 2 Record Equipped, originally designed for running, which were tweaked for golf to monitor walking around the course.

The shoes are fitted with an accelerometer to estimate steps, distance, speed and calories burned.

Spieth had recently teamed up with Under Armour’s golf and Connected Fitness teams to help track his fitness leading up to the competition.

The 22-year-old, who signed a 10-year endorsement deal with Under Armour in 2015, recorded a total of 13,541 steps and burned 1,984 calories on the final round.
