Sport England, the national governing body for grassroot sport, has appointed six new board members.

Amongst those named as new members of the board is Sported chief executive and chair of the BT Sport Industry Award Judging Panel Chris Grant, Leicestershire County Cricket Club CEO Wasim Khan and swimming world champion Karen Pickering.

The new appointments made by culture secretary John Whittingdale also include Everton FC executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale, health and education England chief executive Ian Cumming and Pentland Brands chief executive Andy Long.

All six of the members will serve three-year terms and join existing board members Charles Reed, Debbie Jevans, Ian Drake, Kate Bosomworth and David Goldstone and chair Nick Bitel.

Their remit as Board members will include strategy and policy, the development and implementation of major projects, large grant awards, approving Sport England’s Annual Report and Financial Statements, and overseeing performance management.

Three of the appointees will take their place on our Board in September, with the other three doing so the following month, when the terms of five current members – Clare Connor, Hanif Malik, Peter Rowley, Sally Gunnell and Mark Spelman – come to an end.

Nick Bitel, chair of Sport England, commented: “Our new Board members bring an impressive range of expertise and skills from their experience in not just grassroots and elite sport, but also from business, education and the third sector.

“They share a passion for promoting the positive impact of sport and activity, and a commitment to overcoming the barriers faced by many people when it comes to being active.

“As we embark on our new sports strategy, each of our board members will make a vital contribution in helping us deliver on our vision for a more active nation.”
