Startup and social network Sportlobster has reached one million users in thirteen months. The social network’s ambassador’s include Cristiano Ronaldo, Giorgio Chiellini, George Groves, Michael Owen and Natalie Pinkham.

The London-based startup was launched in April 2013, but has reached the million mark faster than other social networks such as Twitter and Tumblr.

User numbers increased from 30,000 in October to 200,000 in December after an iPhone app launch and Sportlobster is now also available on Android devices. In the past two months, there have been more than 300,000 sign-ups and 11,500,000 page views.

The majority of users are also between 17-28 years old and come from more than 220 territories – 14% from the UK, 13.5% from the US and 7% from India.

Ronaldo, one of the most followed athletes in the world on social media with more than more than 83 million likes and 26 million followers on Facebook and Twitter respectively, said of Sportlobster: ‘I am proud to be an ambassador for Sportlobster. Sportlobster is the perfect place for sports fans to interact online and communicating with my fans is very important to me.’

‘I truly believe in this project, because on Sportlobster we can change the way fans consume sport forever. It has already reached one million users in just over one year. Follow my account and let us enjoy sports together.’

Sportlobster CEO Andy Meikle said of the milestone: ‘I am absolutely elated we have reached the first major milestone. When we hit 10,000 and 100,000 users, we were over the moon, but one million is a completely different kettle of fish. Social networks like Twitter and Tumblr cater to tens of millions of users and are multi-billion dollar companies, but it speaks volumes that we have moved faster than these social networks in the first twelve months.’
