The lengthy dispute between Edinburgh rugby club and the Scottish Rugby Union
appears to have been resolved after the governing body re-took control of the
club from franchise owner Bob Carruthers.
The SRU and Carruthers had been involved in a protracted row over the latter
claiming that the governing body owed the club a seven-figure sum for Magners
League and Heineken Cup fees.
Carruthers, who had been in charge for a season, had threatened court action
to recover the monies he said he was owed although both sides had claimed that
the other had broken their agreement.
The resolution however has seen the SRU pay Carruthers an undisclosed fee for
the club including the facilitation of the transfer of control back to the
governing body.
Without a resolution, the dispute would have seen the Edinburgh club
disbanded by, with an agreement having been reached, the SRU will once again
take control of the club.
The SRU has had a traumatic summer having already disbanded the Border
Reivers because of financial problems.
With the Edinburgh row unresolved, there had been fears that Scotland would
be left with one professional team – the SRU-controlled Glasgow Warriors –
playing professional rugby in the coming season.
Nic Cartwright has been appointed chief executive of Edinburgh by the SRU, a
position he previously held with Harlequins.
