Event organiser Sir Allen Stanford has issued an apology after allegedly offending England cricket players for his behaviour during the team’s Super Series win against Middlesex.
Stanford, who has put up the large £10m winning purse for the Series, was pictured sitting surrounded by the England players’ partners, with wicketkeeper Matt Prior’s wife on his lap.
The 58-year-old’s behaviour was shown on the big screen at the Stanford Stadium, televised, and received considerable media attention after the event.
Many of the players, who saw the clip while on the field, were said to be less than thrilled about the incident
Stanford’s spokesman claimed the Series backer realised that his actions could be deemed inappropriate and has apologised for his conduct. He has also called England captain Kevin Pietersen and Matt Prior personally and they have accepted his apology.
