As the England Test side battles it out against India, the world’s finest cricketing students took to the Kia Oval, London, for the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Championship.
Universities from South Africa, Australia, West Indies and India made the trip to the South London cricket ground to represent their nations on finals day, after qualifying via the group stages.
The Kia Oval played host to two competitive semi finals played earlier in the day, with the West Indies beating Australia and South Africa claiming victory against India in the very last over of a tense game.
Going into the finals day South Africa were unbeaten throughout the competition, held at the Buckinghamshire cricket ground of Wormsley, beating England, Bangladesh, the West Indies and finally India to put themselves in the final.
The West Indies, however, started well with a win against England but lost to Bangladesh and the South Africans before beating Australia to reach the final.
In the final, South Africa’s Johan Wessels scored 61 off 40 balls to post 188 off the 20 overs.
In response, the South African bowling attack proved too much for the West Indies, with Vincent Moore and Corbin Bosch taking 4 and 3 wickets respectively, falling 40 runs short on 148/9.
Commenting on the success in the tournament, Theunis De Bruyn, South African captain, said: ‘The whole experience has been fantastic. It’s been great to meet all the guys from around the world and it’s been a pleasure playing against them.’
‘We were very proud of being chosen to represent our country and to lift the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals trophy here at The Kia Oval was unbelievable.’
