Subaru have become the latest team in to feel the financial burden in motorsport as it pulled out from next year’s World Rally Championship, following Suzuki’s withdrawal earlier this week.
Claiming the sudden decision was due to the economic turndown and its affect on the sport, Subaru leaves its partner Prodrive, a motorsport and automotive engineering group, after the team had already entered the championship for next year.
Prodrive chairman David Richards, who also owns the media and commercial rights for the WRC, claimed that Subaru had called for an emergency meeting, in which the car manufacturer decided that their business could no longer sustain the cost of being a player in motorsport.
The Japanese company leaves behind an impressionable legacy, as Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg all won titles with the team since it was established in 1989.
