Although Kellogg’s dropped its association with Michael Phelps due to his connection with taking drugs, Subway is sticking by its sponsorship deal with the swimmer.
The sandwich shop brand stated it accepted the multi-Olympic gold medallist’s apology, though it was disappointed by his behaviour.
Reportedly, an ad campaign for Subway featuring Phelps was due to begin in the very near future, however, it is now expected to be delayed.
Subway joined other sponsors, including Speedo, Omega, Visa and Pure Sports in voicing support for the Olympic champion after waiting a week to make a decision. Mazda, with whom Phelps has a lucrative advertising deal, has yet to formally respond to the scandal.
Phelps, who has apologised for using ‘bad judgment’ after the News of the World published a photo of him smoking marijuana at a US university, has been suspended for three months by USA Swimming over the incident.
