The Super Bowl set a new world record in terms of social media, with Twitter users sending 10,000 tweets per second in the final three minutes of the NFL’s flagship match.

That number beat both the previous world record – 9,000 tweets per second following Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards – and the previous sporting record – 7,196 tweets per second during Japan’s victory over the USA in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in July. In total, more than 60 billion tweets were sent last year.

Madonna’s half-time performance in the Super Bowl also drew 8,000 tweets per second for five minutes.
In the game, Eli Manning’s New York Giants defeated Tom Brady’s New England Patriots 21-17. The global audience for the game included a sizeable number at Super Bash, the NFL’s official UK viewing party for Super Bowl XLVI, staged at the O2 Arena.

The event was held at IndigO2 within the O2 Arena, and sponsored by Chrysler, with the ballot for tickets hosted via Chrysler’s Facebook page. Chrysler also showcased a specially branded Delta car at the venue, featuring the two participating teams, and provided chauffeur transport for VIP guests as part of the deal.

Chrysler also showcased their new TV ad on Sky Sports during its live coverage of the game. Chrysler acquired the broadcast sponsorship rights for Sky’s NFL coverage as part of their NFL deal announced last year.
