Social sports gaming platform, SuperBru, explains why hundreds of thousands of registered players are taking part in fantasy and predictor games across rugby, football, cricket, golf, motorsport and others.
In response to the ‘second screen’ phenomenon that saw SuperBru inundated with visitors during live sport – people checking their predictions or fantasy teams and those of their rivals, to see what effect the result would have on their league standings – SuperBru has built live scoring functionality.
However, rather than relying on expensive data feeds for the multitude of sports and tournaments available on SuperBru, the live scoring is powered by the community in a crowd-sourcing experiment known as ‘CrowdScoring’.
If a SuperBru player is watching the game live, he or she can input the current score as it changes – the algorithm waits for a certain number of matches before confirming the score on the site. The idea is that if you’re watching the game, you can keep the site up to date for others that are just following on SuperBru – then when you’re not able to watch, other people will keep the scores up to date so that you can follow.
The scores are usually updated almost instantly, and more quickly than any other live scoring service that relies on data feeds or their own inputs and updates. It’s also accurate – the scoring algorithm learns which players it can trust, and the people who are more reliable with their updates are prioritised.
Andy Wood, found of SuperBru said, “We saw big spikes of traffic during matches and whenever the score changed, as people frantically checked who was in line for a Bonus Point.
“Our ‘CrowdScoring’ experiment has allowed us to display live match scores, alongside projected points for each player in a pool, based on their original prediction.”
The response from the SuperBru community has been remarkable, with tens of thousands of people contributing, and many more following.
“One member told us how SuperBru had changed the way he follows sport, providing a vested interest in almost anything that is broadcast on television.
“He watches the game on screen with a smartphone in hand to show live SuperBru scores, and every weekend is a rollercoaster of emotions.”
