talkSPORT is launching a fundraising campaign to support international charity WaterAid to help communities in Malawi get the basic necessities of clean, safe water and adequate sanitation. The station will be asking listeners to back the charity’s Big Dig Appeal by pitching Breakfast co-host Ronnie Irani against Drive co-host Darren Gough in a rowing challenge.

On Monday 23rd July former Essex cricket captain and international batsman Irani and former England cricketer  and Strictly Come Dancing champion Gough will compete to see who can row the furthest in 3 minutes.

talkSPORT’s listeners will be invited to text in to back who they think will win and make a donation to WaterAid.

The funds raised will support WaterAid’s work in rural Malawi, where 20% of the population has no clean water supply, and 44% of people have to cope with having nowhere safe to go to the toilet.

talkSPORT joins more than 30 commercial radio stations across the UK taking part in WaterAid’s Big Dig Appeal. All money donated by the public will be matched pound for pound by the UK Government from the aid budget, helping the charity reach twice as many people.

Overall, WaterAid hopes to raise £1.2m to bring safe water and sanitation to more than 134,000 people in Malawi.

Barbara Frost, chief executive of WaterAid, said: ‘We’re delighted to have talkSPORT’s support for The Big Dig Appeal. Just £15 can provide one person in rural Malawi with safe water, sanitation and hygiene, so all the money raised will make a real difference, and with the UK Government matching every pound, listeners’ donations will go twice as far.’

‘We’d like to thank everyone at talkSPORT for their support, and wish Ronnie and Darren the best of luck for their challenge!’

Moz Dee, programme director talkSPORT added: ‘A fierce competitive spirit is something sportsmen never lose, particularly when they’re part of talkSPORT! This challenge is a great way of Ronnie and Goughie taking each other on at sport while raising money for a fantastic cause. I urge all of our listeners to text in and support WaterAid’s Big Dig Appeal.’
